#GTFOICU, or Home Sweet Home (sort of)

Tyler slept just okay, but for great reasons, he’s in a new place! The EMTs picked him up at 9pm last night and what a change! First of all, the sound: Kaiser is so quiet. Granted, he is no longer on the ICU floor, but still, the vibe is far less anxiety-inducing. Tyler has a room with door (rather than a sliding glass curtain window. He has a private bathroom, control of his bed height and setup, and he can control the lights. These are all important when you otherwise have to rely on other people to get things for you. Plus, Kaiser is close! Highland was a 15 minute drive on 580 from our house, Kaiser is 1.5 miles, and half the drivetime.
Today was a busy one: Tyler met with his new PT/OT and did a edge of bed sit for 5 minutes. Then his attending gave him a review, he is medically fine, so he needs to focus on rehabilitation and goals. So the next steps are determining whether his daily baseline means he is ready for transfer to rehab. We don’t yet have a timetable, it’s a daily evolution of progress, but it may be another few weeks.
And the best part of the day by far, the kids were finally able to see Tyler. They went 16 days without seeing him, except on Facetime, and it was pretty much the greatest feeling since his accident. So great, that we are all exhausted. We were all holding so much anticipation that we could relax some significant tension from the stress of the past 16 days. I’m looking forward to a restful night's sleep tonight.
